‘Gangaikonda cholan’ is the nick name of the great king Rajendran Cholan, the son of Rajaraja. His story is written by the author Balakumaran in a novel where the characters appearing in this novel are realistic. This draw the attention of the readers to involve in this story. Balakumaran brought up a realistic description of what happened during his period. This novel potrays the raise of Gangaikondan, his armour power and the victory of him over the countries which he campaigned for war.

This novel depicts the conquest of Rajendran against Rastrakudas, Chalukyas,Pandias and Cheras. He also invaded the northern Indian countries defeated the kings and conquered the territories from river Ganga to Caveri. His troops are more stronger than any other armours. His elephant, horse troops are trained well to travel over long distances, even overseas. Above all,  these details were written in a very impressive mannerin the novel by the author.

Rajendra is the first king to travel overseas countries like Srilanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Thailand. For this travel, his naval army troops were given strong practices and had more stronger ships than others to withstand storms in seas while travelling. This Naval forces were described in brief in this novel. The novel tells us how he invaded the whole Srilanka and brought the crown of Pandias to Chola dynasty. Rajendra Chola built a vast artificial lake 16 miles long and three miles wide which was one of the largest man-made lakes in India. To witness this great king’s whole life period, ‘Gangaikonda Cholan’ is the best novel to each and every civilians.
