Brihadeeswara temple famously known as the Big Temple located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Thanjavur is the capital of chola kingdom during the period of Rajaraja Cholan. He built this temple as he had a great devotion towards the Lord Shiva. The temple tower is 100 ft height and tallest in the world. The Kumbam of the temple is carved out of a single rock that weighs around 80 tons. There is a big statue of Nandi carved out of a single rock measuring about 16 ft long and 13 ft height at the entrance. The entire temple structure is made out of granite which are taken from the nearest place from the location of temple. The place is known to be Narthamalai.
THE BIG TEMPLE
Big temple started to build in 1002 and finished in 1010 A.D where the year 2010 is celebrated as the 1000 years of Big Temple. Kunjara Mallan Raja Raja Perumthachan is praised today as a father figure to all craftsmen as he is the chief arichitecture to construct the Big temple. Big temple is said to be made up of about 60,000 tons of granite. The capstone itself is made of four pieces of granite weighing about 20 tons.
The basement of this temple is slightly different which wondered many architects ass the depth of the temple below the ground is less and the width of the temple underground is more as it is built according to the characters of the soil on the location.
