UTTHAMA CHOLAN THE MYSTERY

Uttama Cholan was the son of Gandaraditya and his queen Sembiyan Mahadeviyar. He is hugely inspired by his mother Sembiyan Mahadevi in his childhood days. This man has many rumours behind him regarding his crown for kingdom, Aditya’s assasination and the secret fight between him and Rajaraja during 985 CE. Aditya II was assassinated c. 969 CE under mysterious circumstances. This made many to doubt that he is behind this assassination as he had link with Ravithasan and his groups, the assasinate group who killed Aditya. Some news clearly depict that he helped to murder Aditya but still some doubts are roaming there that he is not behind this problem.

Due to death of Aditya II Karikala, the people wanted Rajaraja, Aditya’s brother to be their king, but that noble prince refused to accept the offer saying that so long as his uncle Uttama Chola wanted to be the king. In this mean time nearly 16 years Rajaraja roamed the chola kingdom like a saint and collected news and evidences about the assassination of his brother. Thus, found the culprits Ravithasan with his family and friends did this with the help of Utthama so they are severely punished. By this issue Utthama voluntarily gave up his crown to Rajaraja to rule the chola country.

Uttama Chola was religiously tolerant. He also donated to temples dedicated for Vishnu especially to the Ullagaladar temple. He also granted large degrees of autonomy to his districts. He brought in best talent from other kingdoms. Kanchipuram is also mentioned as one of his prominent cities. Utthama also took battle against some countries that were not detailed in history, his religious equality is praised by peoples in his periods from 970-985 CE. Utthama Cholan died in 985.
