VIJAYALAYA CHOLAN THE PIONEER OF MEDIVAL CHOLAS

Vijayalaya Cholan

Vijayalaya Cholan is a pioneer to not only the Chola kings but also for the Chola dynasty peoples who was in their dark age of Chola kingdom. After Karkalan the raise of cholas is survived for few centuries nearly upto 100-150 A.D. Further, the chola kingdom and its peoples are defeated by the Pandias and Pallavas invasion lost their patriotism towards their country. But no fully defeated as some of the chola kings are survived and managed to rule few chola areas under the power of Pandias and Pallavas. This period from 150 to 840 A.D was called the Dark age of Chola kingdom.

Rise of Vijayalayan occurred in this period of 840 A.D. He waited for the opportunity to defeated the oppositions and to get back his own country to freedom. During this time the war started between Pandias and Pallavas regarding ruling power. In this time Vijayalaya used the opportunity and joined with Pallavas troop which defeated the Pandias who is called as Mutharayar at that time. He took revenge against a muthurayar’s king named Elango in 852 defeated him and captured the city Thanjavur.

Vijayalayan recalled his chola armours to fight against the Pallavas in next years which brought him a big victory. By this conquering he got is chol kingdom back. Vijayalayan then changed the capital from Uraiyur to Thanjvur, recreated the thanjavur into a beautiful city and build new temples. His main work after his victory is the Nisambhasuthini Temple which is built in Thanjavur for the security of chola dynasty.
